Stay active: The worst thing you could do is lay around. Try to stay active and stretch your hamstrings. Applying gentle heat can relieve muscle spasm. Over the counter anti-inflammatories (advil, alleve, etc) can help, but limit use especially if this causes upset stomach. Consult with your physician if your pain lasts greater than 2 weeks.

Several options: Treatments include non steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, chiropractic care, epidural steroid injections and avoiding strenuous activities. If conservative measures fail, surgery. Check out spine-health.Com.

Herniated disc: First, if you have any NEUORLOGICAL problems like a floppy foot, loss of urine control, etc., then get yourself to the emergency room. If pain is your driving symptoms, acutely you can rest for a few days and use anti-inflams if tolerated. If not improving before you move to a rehabilitative phase of care, seek medical evaluation. There are imaging and more invasive treatments that MAY be nec.
