Stay active: The worst thing you could do is lay around. Try to stay active and stretch your hamstrings. Applying gentle heat can relieve muscle spasm. Over the counter anti-inflammatories (advil, alleve, etc) can help, but limit use especially if this causes upset stomach. Consult with your physician if your pain lasts greater than 2 weeks.

Herniated disc: First, if you have any NEUORLOGICAL problems like a floppy foot, loss of urine control, etc., then get yourself to the emergency room. If pain is your driving symptoms, acutely you can rest for a few days and use anti-inflams if tolerated. If not improving before you move to a rehabilitative phase of care, seek medical evaluation. There are imaging and more invasive treatments that MAY be nec.
