How could bilharzia be tackled in a sustainable way?

No easy answers: The control of this devastating infection is difficult and often "progress" (dams) make the problem worse. Any attempt to control snails using chemicals will be attacked by somebody as "unsustainable" or "not environmentally friendly." I'm hoping that the addition of crayfish may be a big part of the answer.
