Chronic lung disease: Bpd means bronchopulmonary dysplasia and it is chronic lung disease seen in infants who were either premature or had serious respiratory illness at birth. It can also be used to mean borderline personality disorder which is a disease of adults, not children.

Broncho Pulm Dysplas: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia, or bpd, is a lung condition seen in premature babies. It can result simply from severe prematurity, or can result from being on the breathing machine (ventilator). Babies with bpd get better slowly over time; some may require oxygen for many months. Babies with bpd are at higher risk of recurrent respiratory infections.

Thickening of tissue: A premi may require long term oxygen use and lots of pressure to push oxygen across the absorbtive surfaces. Some respond to this combination with a thickening of the airways and absorbtive surfaces like a scar from a cut. Over the long term (years) the bpd lungs can repair & remodel the tissue returns to a healthier state. In short, the term bpd means the lung tissue has been changed.

Breathing difficulty: Most infants who develop BPD are born more than 10 weeks before their due dates, weigh less than 2 pounds (about 1,000 grams) at birth, have breathing problems. High oxygen and ventilatory pressures to keep lungs open.Infections that occur before or shortly after birth also can contribute to BPD.Infants that recover may have problems with asthma. More severe cases may require ventilatory support

BPD: Bpd is bronchopulmonary dysplasia, which often affects children born prematurely. Children with bpd may need more frequent breathing treatments than other children, and often require follow-up with a pediatric pulmonoogist.

BiParietal Diameter: Providers who do fetal imaging by ultrasound often use bpd to refer to biparietal diameter, a measure of the width of the fetal head. Dr. Popler is also correct. Once the baby is born, those of us in maternal-fetal medicine use bpd to refer to the older term for the lung condition our colleagues in neonatology and pediatrics treat in some premature infants.
