Surgery: At age 49, it is uncommon to have 3 documented episodes of tonsillitis. There are at least 3 indications for surgery. 1.) recurrent acute tonsillitis, at least 3-4 times a year, 2.) obstructive sleep disorder where the tonsils are extremely large and obstructing the upper airway and 3. Tonsilloliths that produce a very bad odor in the mouth.
