Lumbar disc disease: Lumbar disc disease at the L4/5 level is very common. This is arthritis of the low back. As a disc degenerates or wears out it can bulge, tear and herniate. The facet joints can become weak and the spine can slip or become unstable (retrolisthesis). The L5 nerve root can become compressed and lead to pain and numbness radiating down the leg (sciatica). See a neurosurgeon for treatment.
