Purell is to prevent: Purell is used to clean the skin to prevent transmission of infections not cure them. If the infection is in the skin, cellulitis, you need antibiotics. If the infection is deep, it is an abscess and needs to be drained and then treated with antibiotics. See a surgeon.

Irritant: It may be acting as an irritant try some gentle mild soap. The tyoe of soap is unimportant its the action of the washing that is what is needed for wounds, hydrogen peroxide diluted with water may help too if there is drainage.
