Possible bursitis: This could be a bursitis of the shoulder with pain radiating down the arm. Intermittent heat or cold applications could be tried. NSAIDS, if she can take them may relieve the inflammation. If pain persists or worsens, have a physician evaluate and treat her.

Yes.....but: It's a bit unusual to have a problem arising in the shoulder that results in pain going to the hand. An irritation of the 6th Cervical (neck) nerve could result in both shoulder as well as hand pain. Yes, you can use heat applied to the neck/shoulder area for 15-20 minutes several times a day....but....if your Mom has tingling/weakness in her hand then she should consider seeing her MD
