Sometimes: There are dozens of well-known hereditary cancer syndromes. The most common ones deal with breast cancer, colon cancer, stomach cancer, ovarian cancer, thyroid cancer and uterine cancer. Common names of syndromes are brca, fap, hnpcc, and men. If you are concerned about your family history, discuss it with your primary care physician.

Sometimes...: Some types of malignancy are inherited but many are sporadic and not associated with any familial tendency toward greater likelihood of cancer in family members. "cancer" is a broad category. Is there a specific type of cancer about which you are concerned?
