Night time clenching: also called bruxism, TMJ capsulitis and myofascial pain syndrome. Is a regional muscle disorder that is one of the most common causes of persistent pain in the head, face and neck regions. OTC mouth guard can worsen the condition. Unfortunately, this is chronic pain condition and will not resolve on its own with home care. Take OTC Aleve (naproxen) 440mg 2 X/day and see orofacial pain specialist ASAP.

Ineffective: And can even exacerbate the problem. Take OTC analgesics as per package instructions. Warm compresses may be soothing. See Dentist ASAP. Orthodontic and/or Oral Surgical consultations may be advisable to determine cause of your dysfunction, and therefore the appropriate treatment.

Custom is best: OTC mouthguards can make things worse. If that is all that is available, then trim it so that it does not cover the molar teeth until you can get in to see the dentist.

Perhaps: Perhaps. Can't hurt. . Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.
