Around nipple: The pigmented area around the nipple is called the areola. It is responsive to sex hormones which is why they get much bigger and darker during pregnancy. They can change with the menstral cycle. If just one is swollen it can represent an infection, blocked duct or other inflammation. Rarely breast cancer can effect it. A change in appearance should be checked. Good health
