Night Terrors: Night terrors are a parasomnia - like sleepwalking - that occur during deep sleep, but do not occur during REM (dreaming) sleep, and are not due to nightmares. Children with night terrors will appear to awaken screaming and crying, but they then go back to sleep and awaken in the morning with no recollection of the episode. Your pediatrician can help distinguish between these and nightmares.
