I've read online where girls didn't test positive until 10 weeks pregnant. is this common or should i trust the negative tests?

Yes/No: Home pregnancy tests are very good after about 14 days from conception. Prior to this the level of HCG hormone in your urine is quite low and the accuracy varies. Its uncommon to test negative as late as 10 weeks. The grey area is in cases where you are pregnant but something is wrong--a tubal pregnancy or miscarriage, for example. A HPT may be negative but you are pregnant.

It is not common: Over the counter pregnancy tests have become very accurate. They are not 100% accurate however and accuracy can depend on when you test and testing technique. If you are truly concerned, a visit with your primary care physician may be warranted, but usually the results of home pregnancy tests can be trusted
