Most of these drugs: act on serotonin-related pathways in the brain, and activate parts of the brain that experience visual, auditory, tactile and olfactory sensations, turning on neurons that usually are activated by those stimuli without the stimuli being there - producing hallucinations of various types, as well as having dopaminergic stimulatory effects. There are no lasting changes in most people.
