A member asked:

Can you tell me if throughout digestion, hydrochloric acid (hcl) lowers the stomachs ph and this causes the enzyme?

Stomach vs.gut: The environment in stomach is acidic and stomach enzymes work better at low pH. The environment in intestine is alkaline and the pancreatic and intestinal enzymes work better at higher pH.

Can you clarify?: The stomach ordinarily produces HCl lowering the pH and it is at this pH that the stomach enzymes work best. Further down, other enzymes are present that work at neutral pH. The stomach's acidity is largely about removing calcium from bits of bone. Does this answer your question? Best wishes.
