Level of severity: Mr is divided into mild, moderate, severe, and profound. A 10 year old with mild mr would function at the 5-7 yo level; for moderate mr at the 3-5 yo level; for severe mr, at the 2-4 yo level, and for profound mr at the 1-2 yo level. Unfortunately, not only does mr slow learning; but, the more severe the mr the more quickly a child reaches maximum function.

By IQ score: I was always taught mild intellectual disability ( formerly mental retardation) was having an iq between 55-69 and moderate was 45-54. It's broader now, with mild being 50 to approximately 70 and moderate, 35-50. There have to be significant deficits in adaptive skills ( functioning in daily life) and it has to have started before age 18. Another way is to look at level of support needed.
