Yes. Very common : This option is quite common as a way to quick and effective way if treating a relatively common bacterial throat infection. Docket must confirm infection with a rapid strep test or throat culture. Getting a penicillin shot "in the buttock" will not work for a viral infection.

Maybe/not: If your throat problem is confirmed as strep A, shots are a an option. For most adults, the volume needed would require 2 separate injections , one in each upper/outer thigh. We avoid the buttock to avoid the sciatic nerve. Patients often choose the option to take oral medication two or three times a day, but must do so for a full 10 days to eradicate the germ.
