A member asked:

What tis means hcv by pcr ..result = not detected? does patient has hepatitis c or not?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends.: Hepatits c virus (hcv) is diagnosed with an antibody against hcv (anti hcv ab) and not by pcr. Some number of patients are able to clear initial hcv infection: they will have positive hcv ab and persistently not detected hcv pcr. Hcv pcr tells you what the burden of hcv is in the blood stream as it detects hcv rna.
