Best is prevention: The best approach is to have a plan that you implement every day to avoid constipation. Generous fluid (water) intake is most important, as is including fiber in your diet (particularly whole grains), and exercise. Psyllium supplements (such as metamucil) are very helpful and also can be used as a laxative.

Natural laxatives: The best option is to try and maintain a balanced diet including plenty of water and fruits and vegetables to keep bowel patterns regular. If that's not working you can try warm water with 1-2 teaspoons of salt, a teaspoon of castor oil, prunes and aloe vera juice.

Speak with your doc: Laxatives are dangerous for people recovering from eating disorders. Your best bet is trying to change your diet to include more natural laxatives like prunes, fruits and veggies and fiber. If that does not help your doctor may have non habit forming suggestions.
