Broken nose: You will need an xray to confirm fracture of bone. Cartilage is tissue that is very difficult the tear because it is more rubbery. Pain is the most common symptom and degree of trauma can give a clue. If you deviated the septum you may have trouble breathing.

Swelling, deformity: Certainly there are obvious signs of injury in such cases, but the only way to definitively identify a fracture is with x-ray. See your doctor.
