What might cause an extremely sore throat in child with a negative strep test?

A viral infection: Many viruses can cause a sore throat. Mono and adenovirus are common examples. As these illnesses will resolve on their own and no treatment is available, doctors seldom test for causes other than strep, which is treatable.

Mono: Mononucleosis, caused by the EB virus, adenovirus, parainfluensa virus & a hand full of other agents can trigger some of the worst painful throats I have seen. Comfort care is the only treatment.
