Sore throat: depends if rapid strep or an actual culture!, sometimes an antibiotic is still helpful

It happens: Some of the nastiest throats I have ever seen have been viral, specifically mono, which never responds to antibiotics. Comfort care with chilled foods, soft foods, ibuprofen for discomfort & fever are really all they need. As long as you keep the kid well hydrated their system should gradually take care of the germ.
