Numb, wound cleanser: First, make the patient comfortable. For minor wounds, topical anesthesia (numbing gel) is enough. On larger, deeper wounds, injecting local anesthetic (like novacaine) might be enough. For very deep, serious wounds, general anesthesia will be necessary to both clean and repair the wound. Once the patient is comfortable, washing the wound with lots of saline and/or antiseptic solution can begin.
