Yes it is possible: If the mother is HIV positive it is possible for the HIV infection to pass through breastfeeding. In the usa it is not advised for an HIV mother to bf. In the 3rd world the answer is not so clear, as the child might well be more likely to die from malnutrition or contaminated formula than from the HIV in breastmilk.
