Confusing question: You are considered contagious for 24 hours after starting antibiotics. The duration of your personal symptoms may vary, some a few days , many a week or more.Persistence of symptoms after this point suggest a co-infection with another agent, possibly viral.

The very first one: Most medical guidelines recommend penicillin as the first line agent to treat strep throat. However, i feel that Amoxicillin ( a derivative of penicillin) is more often prescribed simply because it is more tolerable/less side effects. This is debatable. It is important to treat strep pharyngitis as it can cause an array of medical problems down the line in the form of rhematic fever.

How long after?: The antibiotics need time to take effect - at least a few days. If it has been a few days maybe you need a different antibiotic. Lastly if you have mono - and not strep throat, the antibiotic will do nothing for you. All sore throats are not 'strep'.
