Chronic Problem: Lymphedema is usually a chronic problem and can have many causes. Often times the primary cause may be unknown and this is called idiopathic. Primary lymphedema can be congenital, can occur in the teen age years or can occur in the over 40 year old group. Secondary lymphedema is often related to surgery, skin infections or, commonly, in relation to chronic venous insufficiency and leg swelling.
