Over age 6 years: Over-the-counter cough and cold medicines are generally not recommended for children under age 6 years. They lack efficacy and can have significant side effects. There may be certain circumstances where a doctor may direct the use of them in children 4-6 years of age.

Better to wait: The american academy of pediatrics has positioned against cold and cough medications for children, because the side effects of the medications far outweigh the benefit. They do not treat the cold virus. Unfortunately we are all susceptible to these viral illnesses which last 2-5 days, while the cough may persist a few additional day beyond. Stay patient and check with your pediatrician if needed.
