Better way to do it: I am not really sure what you are asking but i assume you are talking about having the back of the bench upright to lean against when doing upright presses. With back issues you would do better lightening up the weight and doing standing unilateral dumbbell presses. This will work your shoulders as well as your core and help strengthen your back.
