Depends on severity: Osteoarthritis of the knee is very common. Treatment usually starts with exercises, activity modifications, and anti-inflammatory drugs. Steroid injections are usually next, followed by viscosupplementation injections, then discussions about surgery, mainly joint replacement. Additional modalities such as tai chi, yoga, active isolated stretching or similar may also be employed as appropriate.

Diagnosis first!: Only if it affect your lifestyle (pain or decreased range of motion affecting your ambulation) treatment must address specific problem. Pain of oa is rarely severe; always look for all possible causes of pain, not just oa. Do not overlook vascular disease, nerve root disease, chronic infection (lyme disease), or immune mediated arthritis. Oa pain responds to anesthetic and steroid injections.
