Many possibilities: Irregular periods can be caused by pregnancy, or hormonal conditions such as low thyroid or elevated prolactin. Heavy exercise and low weight can cause irregular periods too. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (pcos) can also lead to irregular periods.

Hormones: The first 1-2 years after you start your period, your ovaries dont always ovulate. This irregular ovulation pattern can lead to irregular periods. This should get better within the next year or so. If it is bothersome, you can talk to your doctor about birth control which would regulate your cycles.
