A member asked:

How do you diagnose colitis?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Colonoscopy: Colitis is an inflammation of the lower bowel. A direct visualization of the tissue lining the bowel is the most precise way to make the diagnosis. The patient is sedated and a colonoscope is inserted into the lower bowel to examine the tissue. A biopsy may be done during the procedure.
