Placenta abruptio: While it could be other causes, the most serious and life threatening and therefore the one you should think of first is placenta abruptio. Placenta abruptio is the separation of the placenta (the organ that nourishes the fetus) from its attachment to the uterus wall before the baby is delivered. Treatment includes IV fluids and blood transfusions. An emergency cesarean section may be necessary.
