Blighted ovum: A blighted ovum is an empty intrauterine gestational sac. No fetus is identified within the gestational sac. This most commonly occurs when there is a genetic abnormality in this pregnancy and the pregnancy stops developing.

Empty sac: That's unfortunate, i'm sorry. 'blighted ovum' is an older, less precise name for anembryonic pregnancy. It refers to a first trimester pregnancy in which a gestational sac/intrauterine pregnancy is seen but with no embryonic pole (baby.) it's also called an 'empty sac.' to make this diagnosis you must have fairly clear knowledge of gestational age, or 'how far along' you are.
