Depends.: Surgery for gerd certainly can help symptoms, but as with any surgery, there can be complications and long-term side effects. Currently, surgery is recommended for gerd only if the patient is refractory to medical therapy. Have you had a good trial of anti-reflux medications? Did they work? These are questions that you will need to answer with your physician before considering any sort of surgery.
