Different glands: The thyroid and parathyroids are closely related in position. There are 4 parathyroids, one in the region of the upper and lower pole of the right and left thyroid lobes. When doing a thyroid resection the parathyroids are identified and separated. If only one thyroid lobe is removed and parathyroid blood supply lost, the remaining 2 parathyroids are sufficient to function.
