Lab tests: The most common is to evaluate the urine for presence of white blood cells, blood, and a compound called nitrite. If those are present it is highly likely a woman has a uti. If the symptoms are typical for a UTI i think most doctors would at least consider treating it empirically without obtaining clean catch cultures which are the "golden standard".
