I had an abnormal pap. hpv test was neg for high risk strains. can the bv i had then cause atypical results or is it always hpv? no sex in 3+ years.

BV: Bacterial vaginosis may cause an abnormal pap test. Treat the BV successfully and then have a repeat pap test.

Possible and other: Hpv viruses. Hpv is not the only cause of abnormal pap. Other causes of inflammation like bacterial vaginosis may show abnormality. It is also possible that the abnormality is due to an hpv strain that was not tested. Please follow your doctor's advice for follow up tests and treatments. You are still in the age where hpv vaccination is recommended and you should get it.
