Back strengthening: You should have an evaluation, and get a program of exercise from them. Since exercises needed are dependant on what your back issue.

Work with trainer: For questions about specific machines at the gym, work with a personal trainer at the gym. Set aside some time with him or her first to explain your needs (including your back issues if you have them). The trainer can create an overall exercise program to meet your goals. At first it's probably best to have some private workout sessions with him/her, so you know what you're doing.
