I am experiencing constipation and think it is due to 20 mg of abilify (aripiprazole). is this likely or rare?

Not unlikely...: It is definitely possible to have constipation as a side effect to abilify (aripiprazole). Try to drink more water all throughout the day and try to get more fiber from your diet. Remember that caffeinated drinks can cause dehydration, which is the opposite effect you want. Stool softeners (colace) and fiber laxatives like miralax, fibercon, and metamucil can be very helpful ( but require you to drink water)!
