Not good: Bleeding gums are a sign something is wrong. It could be simply food between your teeth too long. Or there could be a general health problem like diabetes or a vitamin deficiency. See a dentist if improved brushing and flossing doesn't clear it up in a couple of days.

Sign: Pain, bleeding, swelling are your body's red flags that there is something wrong. See dentist for evaluation of your supporting tissues. Once systemic disease ruled out, early gum disease easily treatable. Advanced gum disease requires services of a periodontist. Don't delay, go now.
