A member asked:

Is it safe to have a baby if you have hepatitis c, or will your baby almost surely get infected ?

Dr. Jay Park answered

Matter of chance: Vertical transmission of hepatitis c (mother to her newborn) is relatively low. It is current practice that infants born to hepatitis c positive mothers are screened at 12 month of age whether or not their liver enzyme has been elevated, usual indication of vertical transmission.
