Sprains and strains: Heal the best when you can rest the offending joint as much as you can, anything that causes pain is not helpful early in recovery.

Use is a good thing: Using a boot to help support the ligament while it heals is a good thing. The boot should help to decrease the time that the ligament hurts. The support will then allow the ligament to heal without stretching as much as it might otherwise without the support.
