Ultrasound: Not sure what exact type of ultrasound you are referring to, but with any ultrasound, the patient is usually lying on a table with the area to be scanned exposed. The sonographer will put ultrasound gel on the skin for seamless transition of the ultrasound beam from the transducer(scanner) into the body. The sonographer will glide the scanner over the skin, and images will appear on the screen.

Anatomy scan: The anatomy scan is usually done at about 19-20 weeks. The doctor or technician will place the hand-held scan probe on your abdomen and take a detailed look at your baby, the uterus, the placenta and the fluid around the baby. She/he will measure the head abdomen and upper leg bone to determine growth. The brain, face, heart, stomach, kidneys, bladder and other structures will be studied also.
