Asthma: Your description is classic for asthma. Symptoms are active at night and is one of the most common causes of chronic cough. If you smoke it is recommended to abstain at this point as your condition does not seem to be controlled. You will need a pulmonary function test with bronchodilators and possibly metacholine challenge to make a diagnosis which can be done by most gp or pulmonary doc.
