Dr. Paul Grin answered

Specializes in Pain Management

SMP management: The mechanism of smp is unclear and several hypotheses have been offered to explain clinical observation. In cases of smp that are refractory to sympathetic blocks, a surgical sympathectomy may be recommended. Various pharmacological agents have also been used topically to block the release of ne from presynaptic sympathetic neurons with varied success.

Interventions: Typically, injections such as lumbar sympathetic or stellate ganglion blocks can be used in conjunction with physical therapy and non opioid nerve pain medication. Also, spinal cord stimulation has been used effectively to reduce symptoms if other interventions fail.
