Tapering: Some asthmatics must be given oral cortisone during serious attacks. Often it is given as a tapering dose that gradually reduces your daily amount. This is often done when large doses over long periods are used. If it is your controller inhaler, you can sometimes reduce the amount you inhale because your symptoms are controlled and a dose reduction is in order.

Careful: Very important - do you mean steroids by mouth (or injection)? Or simply by spray inhaler (MDI). Very different. When taking oral steroids such as prednisone/prednisolone/methylprednisolone for prolonged periods (more than a few days), cautious slow reduction of dose is required to avoid a (potentially) life threatening adverse reaction. Inhaled steroids far safer; pts vary dose via action plans.
