Can memory foam beds make lumbar back problems worse?

No although certain: Body positions and inadequate sleep can affect your back symptoms. In general a mattress should be comfortable and moderately firm or supportive.

It could be one of : several reasons. You could be a stomach sleeper which is generally not a good position for someone with a back problem. The memory foam may not allow to easily change positions during your sleep. The memory foam may not offer enough firmness for your back to be supported.
