Gestational diabetes: It's diabetes diagnosed during pregnancy. It accounts for about 7% of all pregnancies in the us. Anyone can get it and there are risk factors that can increase your risk of getting it. One thing for sure, if you have gestational dm, you are at risk for developing dm lifelong (not just during pregnancy). Thus if you have been diagnosed with gdm, get check for dm every 3 years lifelong.

Insulin resistance: Gestational diabetes is the result of excessive sugar and carbohydrate intake which causes high blood sugar levels, which then make your Insulin levels rise. Plus the hormone changes in preg make prob worse. . Over time the chronically high Insulin levels lead to Insulin resistance and you will need to make higher and higher levels of insulin. You must improve your diet or you will end up with dm.

There is no: Magic, forbidden or necessary foods when you have gestational diabetes. You need to eat a well balanced diet and exercise daily, as well as monitoring your sugar and keeping it in control. Discuss in depth w/your doctors and the other members of your diabetes team, particularly a good registered dietitian.
