Mucolytics OK: I discourage people from using otc cough preparations if they have asthma. These combinations often have antihistamines that thicken secretions and can worsen your cough. Simple mucolytics like Guaifenesin (robatussin, Mucinex (guaifenesin) ) are helpful.

Maybe: It may help a bit, but does nothing to address the problem of asthma, so it just hides the cause. Proper medication should help you address the cough and the phlegm without using cough medicine.
