Likely a time issue: The replacement hip is not going to last a life time and also the teen has growing to do which will alter the dynamics of the hip. One reason to hold off replacing minor to mod hip degeneration is that hips breakdown in 12-20 years and a re-do hip is much harder. A teen that is no longer growing and gets a hip will in all likelihood need another by age 30. Im not an orthopedic surgeon ask one.

A lot of reasons: Usually, we try to avoid because of the activity demands of teens, continued growth, and expected longevity of the person. Each of these can place the person at risk for needing more surgery down the road. Each time the likelihood of success goes down while the likelihood of complications goes up. However, there are conditions for which teens get joint replacements. Care should be individualized.
