A member asked:

Why is sickle cell anemia so painful? i need some advice.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

More info needed: Sickle cell disease is so painful because the sickled cells criss cross in the tiny blood vessels and decrease blood flow to areas downstream of the vessel. This causes pain because new oxygen and nutrients cannot be delivered and cell waste and co2 cannot be efficiently handled. As a 38 year old with sickle cell disease, you must have had excellent care and recommendations by your doctors.
